Electric Fencing

Stemar Security Systems’ journey began in 1989 as electric fence installers which was the core of our business for several years. We soon became the recommended and official contractors to most of the major armed response companies in Johannesburg at the time and have thousands of electric fence installations under our belt.

We specialise in three types of electric fencing:

Wall Top Electric Fencing:

Wall top electric fencing protects the area above boundary walls and gates preventing intruders from simply hopping over. To ensure the effectiveness of the fence, a minimum of 8 strands of wire providing a barrier of 900mm in height is recommended. Fence poles should not be spaced more than 3m apart.

Piggy Back Electric Fencing:

Piggy back electric fencing is a multi-strand electric fence which is attached to an existing vulnerable structure such as a precast wall, mesh or steel palisade fence. The fence wires are usually installed from ground level to above the structures height preventing intruders from going through or hopping over the wall / fence.

Free Standing Electric Fencing

Free Standing Electric Fencing:

A free-standing electric fence is an independent fencing system designed to provide security or contain animals without the need for additional support structures. Most common applications include:

  • Agriculture: Used extensively to manage and protect livestock, keep predators out and safeguard crops from wildlife.
  • Security: Employed in residential, commercial and industrial settings to enhance perimeter security and prevent unauthorised access.
  • Wildlife Management: Helps in controlling the movement of wildlife to protect both animals and property.

Is an Electric Fence a good deterrent?

Electric fencing is a highly effective deterrent against potential intruders and unauthorised access. It works by delivering a non-lethal but powerful electric shock to anyone attempting to climb, cut or breach the fence. The shock is enough to create a strong psychological and physical deterrent dissuading trespassers from attempting to breach the perimeter.

Here are some reasons why electric fencing can be a great deterrent:

  1. Psychological impact: The presence of electric fencing alone can deter intruders. They recognise the risks associated with attempting to breach it and may choose to avoid the property altogether.
  2. Physical barrier: Electric fencing provides an additional physical barrier beyond traditional fences making it more difficult for intruders to gain unauthorised access.
  3. Alarm system and integration: Electric fence energizers include alarm outputs for sirens and strobe lights to create an audible alarm and visual display when breached. Energizers can also be integrated with alarm systems alerting armed response companies, security personnel or residents when the fence is tampered with or breached.
  4. Cost-effective: Compared to some other security measures, electric fencing can be a cost-effective solution for securing large areas or perimeter boundaries.

While electric fencing is an effective deterrent, it is often combined with other security systems such as CCTV cameras, outdoor alarm beams, access control and manned security personnel which provide a more comprehensive and robust security solution.

Electric Fence Configuration

The effectiveness of an electric fence depends on proper installation, maintenance and adherence to local regulations and safety standards. An electric fence correctly configured in a series circuit will detect both a cut and a short in the fence.
